Janet’s Guide to Caring for Your Loved One and Yourself

Watch Janet reflect on becoming a student of her husband Euvon’s prostate cancer diagnosis and making decisions as a team. She also shares tips on balancing caregiving with self-care, reminding others to care for themselves while supporting their loved ones.

JANET: My husband, Euvon, and I built a life together.

Euvon and I met when my a capella group joined his boy band. Three years later we were married. We raised four children in a house full of love. Music was our foundation, and it still is.

When Euvon was diagnosed with prostate cancer, it felt like my world stopped. Before Euvon was diagnosed, he was the strong guy in the household. And suddenly, I had to be the one to take care of him.

This journey started with small things. I noticed Euvon limping. He always brushed it off kind of like giving excuses, but then the limp got worse. And as it progressed, I noticed not only was he limping harder, but he was eating less.

One night, I saw Euvon from the bedside light, and I noticed that this guy in front of me looked like he was about 50 pounds lighter. I knew something was wrong.

Euvon went to an oncologist. After a biopsy, the doctor told us that Euvon had stage four metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer, or mCSPC. When I heard the words stage 4 prostate cancer, my heart went black. I was choking on my own breath. And when we learned that it had already spread, we were overwhelmed.

I felt that our future was going to take a detour that was forcing us into an unknown, a frightening unknown, and we were going to need to fight as hard as we could until we couldn't.

And that's what we've been doing ever since.

My job was to become a student of his diagnosis and to get involved. My therapy was researching prostate cancer—researching the symptoms, the causes, how to help a patient with prostate cancer.

We changed our diet to organic and Mediterranean, and we changed our home environment by using air purifiers and water filters. So everything that I gleaned off of the internet, I would take it to his oncologist, and we would try to merge the conventional with the natural.

And she walked us through treatment options, and that's when we first heard about XTANDI. Our doctor told us that XTANDI was a once-a-day oral medication to treat advanced prostate cancer.

ANNOUNCER: XTANDI (enzalutamide) is a prescription medicine used to treat men with prostate cancer that:

  • no longer responds to a hormone therapy or surgical treatment to lower testosterone

OR

  • has spread to other parts of the body and responds to a hormone therapy or surgical treatment to lower testosterone

OR

  • has not spread to other parts of the body and responds to a hormone therapy or surgical treatment to lower testosterone, and who are at high risk of cancer spreading to other parts of the body

It is not known if XTANDI is safe and effective in females or children.

Important Safety Information

XTANDI may cause serious side effects, including seizure, posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES), allergic reactions, heart disease, falls and bone fractures, and swallowing problems or choking.

You will learn more about these and other side effects later in the video.

JANET: Euvon and I always make big decisions together, and choosing the right treatment option for him was one of them. We prayed and we decided to give XTANDI a try.

Starting XTANDI was a turning point for us, and we have been pleased with the results. It gave us hope. We felt like we were making progress in delaying the progression of this disease.

There were challenging days that we faced together. Our doctor talked to us about the most common side effects of XTANDI, including muscle and joint pain, feeling more tired than usual, hot flashes, and constipation.

ANNOUNCER: What are the possible side effects of XTANDI?

XTANDI may cause serious side effects including:

  • Seizure. If you take XTANDI, you may be at risk of having a seizure. Avoid activities where a sudden loss of consciousness could cause serious harm to yourself or others. Tell your doctor right away if you lose consciousness or have a seizure.
  • Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome (PRES). If you take XTANDI you may be at risk of developing a condition involving the brain called PRES. Tell your doctor right away if you have a seizure or quickly worsening symptoms such as headache, decreased alertness, confusion, reduced eyesight, blurred vision or other visual problems. Your doctor will do a test to check for PRES.
  • Allergic Reactions. Allergic reactions have happened in people who take XTANDI. Stop taking XTANDI and get medical help right away if you develop swelling of the face, tongue, lip or throat.
  • Heart Disease. Blockage of the arteries in the heart (ischemic heart disease) that can lead to death has happened in some people during treatment with XTANDI. Your doctor will monitor you for signs and symptoms of heart problems during your treatment. Call your doctor or go to the emergency room right away if you get chest pain or discomfort at rest or with activity or shortness of breath during your treatment with XTANDI.
  • Falls and Bone Fractures. XTANDI treatment may increase your risk for falls and bone fractures. Falls were not caused by loss of consciousness or seizures. Your doctor will monitor your risks for falls and bone fractures during treatment with XTANDI.
  • Swallowing Problems or Choking. Severe swallowing problems or choking, including life-threatening problems or death can happen in people during treatment with XTANDI, because of the size of the XTANDI capsules and tablets. Swallow each XTANDI capsule or tablet whole with enough water to make sure that you can swallow all of the medicine successfully.

Your doctor will stop treatment with XTANDI if you have serious side effects.

Additional safety information can be found later in this video.

JANET: XTANDI became a part of our daily routine and it didn't define our lives, and that's what matters the most. We have the time to enjoy the things we love, like spending time with our family, playing music and enjoying the little things in life. This is just our experience and everyone's experience with XTANDI may be different.

I learned how important it is not only to take care of your loved one who's battling cancer but to take care of yourself too.

Taking care of myself means to me just doing little things that make me feel that I'm okay, I can go on cruises and go to the beach with one of my cousins. I enjoy writing, I enjoy reading.

It's extremely important for Euvon to know that he's not alone, and it's as important to know I'm not alone. I surround myself with other family members and friends who are also caregivers. I listen to their experiences and they listen to what we're going through. We can shed a few tears together and we can share some hope together.

I've been involved with several support groups for caregivers, and it's been so important because we have a conversation about how we deal with this prostate cancer battle, and we can learn from each other.

I always look for ways to give advice to caregivers who are just starting this journey.

Some of the questions you should ask your doctor are:

  • Are there good treatment options?
  • What can I do to give my loved one hope?
  • What do I need to do?
  • What can I anticipate would be the side effects that I need to pay attention to?

I try to make other caregivers understand the importance of taking care of themselves first. I believe it is very easy for caregivers to fall into a dark place.

Some of the little things that I often suggest is to take yourself to a movie, take yourself to a spa, get a manicure or pedicure. Connect with someone who doesn't mind going to lunch with you and letting you breathe.

In the beginning of my caregiving role, it was fearful. It was moving and living in the unknown. Now, it's more filled with hope.

Being a caregiver means never losing sight of the life you're fighting for. You want to still be able to find joy in those everyday moments. This journey isn't easy. But with love, hope, and the right treatment plan, you can move forward.

We've been given more time. More songs to play, more meals to share, and more moments to enjoy the people we love.

EUVON: I can't imagine what my battle with prostate cancer would be without Janet on my side. She cooks for me what I need to eat. She supplements and helps with my scheduling.

My wife has been more than just a caregiver for me—she has been everything.

She's been my partner and my best friend, and I can't thank her enough for that.
